Shoe Recommendations for Early Walkers
Let’s talk toddler shoes. If you have ever stood in the baby shoe aisle wondering, “What are the best shoes for my baby?” “When should I get shoes for my baby?” -you are not alone. First and foremost, barefoot is best as it allows your baby to feel where they are in space, which builds confidence and balance. Unless there is significant milestone delay, babies’ feet typically develop best outside of shoes so it is important to not put shoes on them too early or all day.
When to put shoes on my child?
When your child is walking confidently indoors, in places like daycare
When your is walking on uneven, safe surfaces such as sandy or grassy surfaces (good for sensory processing and balance)
Or if you notice signs of excessive flat feet, joint hypermobility, or delayed standing milestones.
What to look for when it comes to shoes:
Proper size – have your child stand with the shoes on and feel for the toe (make sure there is adequate space between toe and end of the shoe)
High top - The top around the shoe to above the ankle bones
Sturdy heel cup (especially for low tone kiddos)
Wide toe box
Minimal soft fabric covering
Protective, flexible, hard sole
Velcro, zipper or shoelaces that the child cannot undo
